The Music

Did you notice the use of music? Of course there is the Leonard Cohen song. But there is also that haunting music with some sort of Indian flute. This theme plays at several important points in the film. And there is the very peaceful music that plays during the scenes in the field. It perhaps takes longer to realize that all those people are looking for a dead girl because the music is so tranquil.

I thought the classical music playing at Thomas' pet shop was a little jarring in the seedy, dirty pet shop where he worked.

Do you believe Thomas when he says that the gun was his father’s? So did Thomas come by the pet shop the same way that Zoe came by the club? It doesn’t seem that Thomas is really up to running such a business. The tanks are all filthy, and in the one scene it looks like he isn’t having much luck fixing a leak. Francis says his books are a mess too. Thomas seems bright and knowledgeable, but not very practical. I was wondering if he would be more comfortable as an academic. He often seems bewildered like maybe he doesn’t know himself what brought him to this point.

If Thomas plays classical music at work and at home, then maybe he also has an interest in ballet beyond the cruising scene?

That's interesting. You'd think if he could smuggle fragile eggs, he could keep a fish tank clean. Maybe his smuggling activities take him away from properly running the place.

So the shop is in bad shape because of a lack of interest more than a lack of competence?

Well, I also expected him to goof up his stakeout for Francis, and he held his own. He was awkward, yes, but I'd need a second viewing to call him all-around incompetent.

I hadn’t thought about that. Maybe I didn’t have any expectations about how the stakeout would go. The dry run with Francis wasn’t too promising. And actually, Christina picked up right away that he wasn’t a regular customer, but then she suggested an alternate role that he might be playing which he latched on to. So he was awkward sure, but he got all the info and didn’t blow his cover.

I wasn’t suggesting that he was an all-around incompetent, just short on some practical skills that it seems he would need in his line of work. Maybe social skills too. There is a hint of geekiness to him that makes me wonder how he relates with customers in his store.
