March 16: "Climates"

Here’s your reminder, kc!

That film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, “Climates”, that I put up a post about a month ago will be starting at the Tivoli on March 16. I don’t know how long the run will be, but don’t miss it.

We were talking about films where the landscape is a character? Well, in “Climates” seasons play that role. This film is a probing look at a relationship without much talk about the relationship. I am so glad I drove down to the Bay to see this on screen since the visuals were stunning and carried a lot of the film.

Good! I look forward to hearing your reaction. As you know, I am quite impressed. If you are not, we can argue about it here.

Darling, guess who just e-mailed me? Bill Martin! I haven't heard from him in a few years. He just drove home to Kansas from Chicago (spring break) and wants to do some cycling around Lawrence.

Cool, well say hi for me, then. How has he been doing?

Did I ever tell you about the climber I met who looked a bit like Martin and had amazingly similar mannerisms and speech? I first met him down in Joshua Tree in the late ‘90s. He was spending the whole winter there and the rangers were trying to throw him out but couldn’t find him since he didn’t have a car or tent. They kept asking people—climbers!—if they had seen him. Seen who?

This guy was a strong climber, and heavy drinker, but what was most impressive was his amazing memory. He had a head full of trivia and factoids that was perfect for sitting around a campfire. And if you had a question about a climb, he could give you detailed info even if he had done a thousand other climbs since he was on it.

Recently Yosemite National Park got an injunction barring him since he had been living there undercover for too many months. (Leaving ropes and gear hanging off of El Capitan for weeks on end didn’t endear him to the Man.) Over the years he has slowly gone mad. At one point he wrote a large opaque book about physics—completely made-up physics. Now he is a bum hanging out in Sacramento. The climbing gym lets him in to use the shower and what not—he is sort of the mascot or at least an adopted stray.
