Alien hand syndrome

What do you think of Dr. Strangelove being in a wheelchair and having an alien hand? Wikipedia says “Strangelove’s appearance echoes the movie villains of the Fritz Lang era in 1920s Germany, in which sinister characters were often portrayed as having some disability.”

And why is he able to walk at the end?

I don't know if this is the answer, but I've read some theories that Strangelove is symbolic of the Nazi ideology, which is "crippled" after WWII. The alien hand syndrome is to show that even though he works for the U.S. now, a part of him will always be a Nazi. And the standing up is again symbolic of the Nazis. He stands up as they are forming the plan for the master race to be created in the mine shafts. It's like the Nazi ideology is "on its feet" again.

That makes sense to me, Erin.

The war machine does nothing so well as create and re-create an atmosphere in which fascism can thrive.

Every time someone said "Doomsday Machine" in the film, I thought of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and our present-day lunacy.

From the very beginning, one of the top priorities of the U.S. military in the event of a nuclear war was to preserve the ability to create nuclear weapons. Or, if the ability was lost, to reacquire it as quickly as possible.

I read Dr. Strangelove the way that Erin suggests too.
