Fric and Frac

What did you make of the son of the boss's brother and his friend? Why was this goofy pair in the movie? Did the disability have a special significance?

Very good question. I wondered the same thing. We never get any story about them. Maybe their interaction with the boss gives his story more context (maybe), but what about the fishing scene? Why was that in there?

The guy in the wheelchair reminded me of Cartman from South Park — the way he shouted and his general brassiness. I was reading that the director, Kitano, is also a comedian, so maybe they were just supposed to be basically a comic thread and, yes, also give some context to the boss (that he indulges their demands speaks to his loyalty). They have their own afflictions, but love sickness isn't among them.
