The Firecracker Kid

What did you make of this little hooligan? Why was he introduced into the film? What did you make of his interactions with the women?

Good question. I found him pretty funny. And I liked that he was male but was essentially the same as the girl prisoners.

I think the interactions with the kid and the women and the soldiers showed (among other things) that the soldiers were not that serious about some of their views on women and men.

That was the important point for me, too, Erin. Like them, he was an outsider, a whipping boy, someone who had always been marginalized in his society, but he still had this great capacity for joy and was willing to risk his personal safety and security to do his own thing. He didn't kowtow to the man. He kept some illicit fireworks in reserve because, dammit, there might be cause to celebrate, and, if so, what fool would want to be without a sparkler?

Did you think it was interesting on the bus that they were throwing around the term "chicks"? (And not via translation.) I wonder how that became Iranian vernacular. I'm commenting here because I think the boy threw that out first.

Yeah, that was interesting. When the kid used the word, I thought it just sort of highlighted what a little punk he is (charm aside). He had a lot in common with the women, really, and yet it was still sort of important for him to feel superior to them, like, well yeah, I'm a fuck-up and an outcast, but, please, at least I'm not a woman!
