Pacing and plot
Starting with when Carlos, Marisa and Candela invade Pepa's apartment, I'd give this movie a 9 or 10. Before that, I think the beginning is pretty confusing (with or without the language barrier) ... especially the very start: Credits, Pepa, dream sequence, Ivan in studio, Pepa. Did anyone else experience this or any other difficulty following the plot?

I found it hard to follow, too. I'm glad I'm not alone. But maybe that's intended — a feeling of just being thrown into confusion, anarchy. (?)
This isn’t the only Almodovar movie like that. It might be an intentional devise to throw the viewers off kilter just like the characters are. Or it might just be that he figures the viewer can get up to speed quick enough to not need any hand holding. I kind of think that he likes to start his movies with the possibilities wide open. If you try to guess where he is going, you are probably wrong.
I almost always feel confused at the beginning (middle and end) of a movie.
That person who's whispering, "Why'd he kill her?! I thought they were friends!" or "Who's that guy??" in the theater?...yep, that's me.

Hehe. I see you've hit a nerve with DW, who is normally the soul of hospitality and gentleness.
But I'm that person. too, Noir. I'm often confused at movies. When cl and I saw "The Skeleton Key" together, she said something on the way home like, "Of course (so-and-so) was (so-and-so), but I was surprised by (X)." She said it as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and neither observation — both obviously true — had ever occurred to me! And when I was watching "Carnivale" on HBO I had to have Erin explain all the plot twists to me.
It doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the movie to not fully understand it. I enjoy it as much as the next person, and I enjoy it even more when I finally understand it.
Ha ha! Ok, I wont spend any time mumbling aloud to myself, "Didn't Driftwood invite all the Cinema Chatter bloggers over for a movie?? - What happened? Was that movie night tonight?? What day is it today?"
Remember we began the film with an ending -- Pepa and Ivan's relationship was already over. Lends to the confusion but adds to the surprises later. I enjoyed it.
Ok, the whole film club is invited over for a non-movie viewing party—unless you all want to try and invent new responses for “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Drinks will be provided, but you buy your own airfare.

The beginning was confusing, yeah. I didn't realize until just now that the black and white Ivan scene was a dream sequence. Duh.
Erin, I didn't get that at first, either. Hence I found it very confusing. It's almost a daunting film to stay with initially.
