I think that it's the stupid Broadway show that did it. Now Christine Ebersole is on The View and Rosie's talking about it - it's on the Today show, etc.
I think that the musical is an easier-to-digest version of their story, so the general public can handle it - and maybe make fun of them.
But the film has so many levels - you want to laugh, but feel bad for it, but then you want to laugh with them and you want to pity them, but then you don't, etc. Not everyone can appreciate it. That's what makes it a cult classic.
So I think that the Edies don't appeal to everyone - but the Maysels Edies and the Broadway Edies together cover the spectrum.
This is a clip from "Theater Talk" with Christine Ebersole talking about why she thinks GG is popular with gay men -- and people in general. Co-star Mary Louise Wilson is in it, too.

Excellent point, Amy, about "covering the spectrum."
