star power
"Sheila" had some big '70s names in its cast, but that didn't guarantee five-star acting. Raquel Welch CANNOT act, which I had always heard but never confirmed, and the worst scene had to be her breathy tell-me-your-clue close-up on board with her mystery lover (Tom). Compare with the magnificent James Coburn, who seemed to relish his Machiavellian role (puffing those big cigar rings). I have never before seen an actor who could emote with his teeth!
Thoughts on any standout performances? I was mixed on Dyan Cannon. I know her character was supposed to be annoying, but ...

I have trouble keeping characters and actors straight, but I do agree that James Coburn was very good.
Yeah, James Coburn rocks. I thought Dyan Cannon played it well. An annoying Hollywood type.
The others were less impressive. I found Richard Benjamin's mustache really distracting.
Ben, on first viewing, I had to go back and replay the parts until they met at the boat. I just had trouble getting the context of their relationship to Clinton and their career moves. It also took a second viewing for me to understand that Alice's career was supposed to be in turmoil, too.
Erin, I could NOT stop looking at that mustache! I think he would have been really handsome without it, but it was so distracting! Blech!
Has anyone seen any other James Coburn movies? I think I'm going to go back and see what else he's been in. I'm sort of taken with him. He reminds me of Burt Lancaster -- older, but still has this riveting presence.
It looks like he did a ton of TV in the 50s and 60s.
I think the only thing I remember him from is Hudson Hawk.
The mustache was very 70s. It would have been perfect for a cop. I think it was one of the elements that dated the movie.
Right, it was one of those horrid '70s porn star mustaches. It was all I could look at when he was talking.
I'm immediately thinking of James Coburn in "Maverick" with Mel Gibson. He stole scenes in that, too.
