Music

What did you think of the score? It seemed to be classic American superhero music that would work for something like Superman or Batman or The Mask. I thought it did the job very well without being a parody.

Doesn't anyone have anything to say about the music?

Well Ben, I did think just a day or two ago that I didn’t have any distinct memories of the music. That probably means that I didn’t pay it much attention while watching. Do you suppose that the music was intended that way—to contribute energy and shape the emotional tone—without being something that typical viewers would focus on?

As the most musically centered of this crew, do you want to tell us more about what you found in the music and maybe the rest of us will remember something? At various times I thought they were developing a James Bond motif. Mostly that was because of he visuals of the island and whatnot. Did the music give those segments a Bondish cast?

I'd have to see the movie again. I don't remember the music enough to comment.

Oh, good call, Ricky. That would be a plus. I don't care for those kid-movie soundtracks that are full of pop music. I don't like it in adult movies either, unless it has a point beyond adding atmosphere. I think the use of Donovan's peaceful, dreamy "Atlantis" as the backdrop to a brutal mafia murder in "Goodfellas" had a big point (for example).

I don't remember the music, either. A James Bond-ish sound does seem kind of familiar, though.

When it comes to film, the music is supposed to add to the enjoyment without you really noticing. So it did its job.

The score was big and brassy, with lots of trumpet fanfare. It was really loud during the opening title and chase scene. It was very American-sounding. It enhanced each scene by matching the mood of the animation and plot.

I found it to be Bond-like, but perhaps a little less noticable. (Bond music can be played at a concert and recognized; I’m sure this couldn’t be.)

If you still have the movie, listen to the very beginning -- it’s great stuff.
