And the barn

Any theories?

And I don't know what to think of the barn. Did it have something to do with his mother?

I don't really have my own theory on the meaning of the fish or the barn or the other seemingly random elements. One critic refers to them like this: "Mike’s narcoleptic escapades are comprised of fragmented footage: fast moving clouds in vast, blue skies; salmon jumping up stream; and old, scratchy, 8mm film of Mike's trailer park past."

But don't these images appear even when Mike is awake? I'd have to rewatch.

the Washington Post and Rolling Stone, both of whose critics loved the movie, refer to the elements as simply surreal (beyond comprehension like many of the images in our own brains) or as "poetic snatches of memory."

I just came across this long, but extremely comprehensive look at the film that makes a lot of excellent points and comparisons.
