Next time ...

My apologies, everybody. Recommended for the next cinematic selection: Ensure that the movie is out on DVD (because many rental places, like Blockbuster, have stopped renting VHS), and also check that it's on Netflix. "Women" is not on DVD, so I think some people still haven't seen it. My library copy is en route to the McDs right now.

But wait! George informs me that he rented it on DVD last night. He says those dweebs at LH who said it wasn't out on DVD are lying sacks of poo.

Blcokbuster, at least the one here, is not good for much except new releases.

The DVD was released on April 10, 2001, and is apparently somewhat rare. Used copies on Amazon.com run between $64 and $125, while an unopened copy is being sold for $175.

You can get it for much cheaper on eBay, but most copies are Region 2, so you'd have to have a European DVD player or know how to break the international copy protection.

My local independent movie place had it on VHS. They have a good selection, but they tend not to spend much of their money buying DVDs if they already have tapes. They should get this one though since it is being used for a film class on campus.

This would be a good title for Criterion to release.

I should add, regardless, that even if we get the discussion going, if we can avoid any spoiler posts (or at least note them as such), anyone late to the party will be able to enjoy the flick. Just a suggestion!

I look forward to the parcel. I'll try to get it back to Lawrence before the library starts fining you to death!

Hehe ... thanks, Erin. As you probably know, the library's one of the few places in town where I'm in good standing.

I had the intern at my office call all the movie houses 'till she found it. Then when I stopped at the movie house I could only find it in VHS - I almost had a tantrum. But then the kind clerk showed me to the comedy section where they had two copies on DVD. Score!

Oh, good use of the intern, Noir. I'm sure that experience will serve her well in her career.

"Movie house" is so much nicer than "video store."

It is. When I wrote “movie place” above I actually stopped for a minute trying to decide what to call it. I took refuge in the vague. But this establishment employs a bunch of kids in the film program who hang out together. So it is a sort of second house for them.

And I need an intern to make all my calls too.

NM, is that the spoiled summer intern who can't drive a car? That is awesome.

Noir Muse said...

kc, I was a intern once and I consider this the hazing that all interns need to experience.

cl - Yep, the very one. In reality, she's a pretty good gal. (if you look past the consistent tardiness, and office resource abuse.)

kc said...

Certainly. I'm all for hazing.

Haha! I love that you're still catching these comments, kc.

(an afterthought: of course, asking the intern to make calls on behalf of myself and Cinema Chatter is probably considered office resource abuse as well.)

Kc: you are such a sadist. Why didn’t you do a sorority?

Noir muse: no, isn’t resource abuse something only other people do? You were just utilizing your perks, right?

I was this close to pledging, DW — did you see the Onion headline "Lesbian chicken enjoying henhouse"? — I thought it would be the same sort of deal, you know? But, oddly enough, it wasn't.

You just needed to have pledged one of those houses from a porno movie. All the sisters are in on the action, and they don’t ever waste any time on all those committee meeting, charity gigs, and the like.
