Favorite scene

Did you have a favorite scene in "Sweet Smell of Success"? I'm partial to the scene in the theater where all the main characters are present and J.J. and Sidney are tag-teaming Steve (and Susie runs off to cry). I also liked the scene where Sidney was trying to blackmail the married man in front of his wife and the guy was so disgusted that the consequences of his wife learning about a sexual dalliance were preferable to — more comfortable to his conscience than — giving slimy Sidney what he wanted.

Those are good choices. The one that sticks out in my mind the most right now is the one with the cigarette girl back at the office. I think the acting in that scene is very good.

I also liked the scene with J.J., Sidney, and the senator (and other people). I think that scene did a good job of quickly showing exactly who J.J. was.

All good choices. But I don't have anything new to add because I think my favorites were the failed blackmail, (I loved the wife), and the first scene with J.J. and the senator.

I think Sidney meeting up with J.J. early in the movie at 21 and watching the latter skewer every member of the dinner party was what I enjoyed the most. I don't think anyone has mentioned lighting yet, but that scene also was striking to me. Somehow the light was manipulated to hit J.J. in a way that his glasses seemed darker and his expression inscrutable. It added to the tension about what J.J. would say or do next. I didn't notice it so much in later scenes.

Oh, I noticed the light/glasses thing in that scene, too. Very evocative.
